About this project
Baroque Art in the 21st Century using Generative AI” is an exploration of how classical Baroque masterpieces can be reinterpreted using cutting-edge AI technology. Developed for the ILL 16 BaroXmedia Projection Mapping event at Stift Melk Monastery, Austria, the project merged historical art, AI-driven digital visuals, and cyberpunk aesthetics to create a futuristic reimagining of classical artworks.
At the heart of the project was the fusion of Baroque elegance with modern generative AI techniques, notably applied to the iconic painting The Girl with a Pearl Earring. By integrating AI-generated visuals, neural networks, and real-time projection mapping, the artwork was transformed into an interactive, dynamic experience, symbolizing the evolution of art from the past into the digital age.
This project was a result of international collaboration, bringing together students from Portugal, Romania, and Austria, who worked under the guidance of expert mentors. The initiative was led by Marcus Winterberger, who played a crucial role in organizing and mentoring participants throughout the creative process.
The final exhibition, held on June 4, 2022, at Stift Melk Monastery, invited the public to experience an immersive projection mapping showcase, demonstrating how classical art and AI-driven innovation can coexist in modern digital storytelling.
